In chronological terms this is the first story where Moriarty is mentioned, but in release terms it came some time after the quintessential Moriarty yarn, The Final Problem and this has been subject of some debate amongst scholars as it features one of the more famous contradictions in the ACD Holmesian canon. Watson suggests he had never heard of the ‘Napoleon of Crime’ in The Final Problem, yet some years earlier, The Valley of Fear happened. Hmm…
