A rarity in the ACD canon, a Holmes story narrated by Holmes himself. This is one of only two stories in this vein. Published in 1927, the story – set in 1903 – tells of a soldier worried for a fellow soldier out of contact unexpectedly. It is also unique in the way ACD brings the story to an almost twee, happy ending.

That said, Holmes’s statement above could keep Freud busy for a while…
