Sherlock Holmes QotD: 7th January, 2015

The-Red-Headed-League-2Beyond the obvious facts that he has at some time done manual labour, that he takes snuff, that he is a Freemason, that he has been in China, and that he has done a considerable amount of writing lately, I can deduce nothing else.” From The Adventure of the Red Headed League

Published in 1891, this story is a personal favourite of mine as it features many of the things that makes Holmes great. In the case of the above quote, we see that classic and never tiresome ability of Holmes’s to deduce many a fact from the sparsest of evidence. This is a classic too good to be true story.
